John Elefteriades

Speaker

Dr. Elefteriades, a cardiothoracic surgeon and expert in aortic diseases, is Emeritus Director of the Aortic Institute at Yale-New Haven. He received his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Yale University with a triple concentration in physics, French, and psychology. He did his medical school, general surgery, and cardiac surgery training at Yale. He holds the William W. L. Glenn endowed chair in surgery. He has authored over 500 scientific articles and 9 books, including two books for the general public (the inspirational Extraordinary Hearts and the medical ethics thriller Transplant). He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal AORTA. 

In 2018, Dr. Elefteriades was awarded an Honorary PhD by the University of Liege, in recognition of contributions to the science and treatment of aortic disease. In 2019, Dr. Elefteriades was inducted into the highly select Athens Academy, which draws its inspiration from Plato’s Academy and represents the highest academic honor bestowed by Greece for accomplishment in any scholarly discipline.

Dr. Elefteriades is the author of the books House Officer Guide to ICU Care (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Editions), Advanced Treatment Options for the Failing Left Ventricle, Diseases of the Aorta, Your Heart: The Owner's Guide, The Woman’s HeartAcute Aortic Disease and recently published Practical Tips in Aortic Surgery. Dr. Elefteriades recently published the book Extraordinary Hearts (Penguin), telling ten inspirational and instructional patient stories for the general public. Dr. Elefteriades published his first fiction work, the medical mystery/ethics thriller Transplant (Penguin), which was a finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards competition for best first novel.

In 2019, Dr. Elefteriades received the Golden Scalpel Award for Resident Teaching. He was also named by expertscape as the “top-rated expert in Aortic Aneurysm in the world.”
