Speaker

Christian Etz is chief of Cardiac Surgery at the University Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Universitymedicine Rostock. He has been the Director of Aortic Surgery and Attending Cardiac Surgeon at the Universitydepartment of Cardiac Surgery at Heart Center Leipzig. Furthermore, he held the Heisenberg-Professorship of the German Research Foundation and was the Director of the Saxonian Incubator for Clinical Translation at University Leipzig. His research focusses on spinal cord protection in thoracoabdominal aortic aneruysm repair and proximal aotopathy in context of bicuspid aortic valve. He has established the concept of the paraspinal collateral network as a major blood supply of the spinal cord, which can be enhanced by staging the procedure based on the mechanism of arteriogenesis. Besides staging the repair, priming the collateral network by minimally-invasive segmental artery coil embolization (MISACE) prior to definite anuerysm repair is currently being investigated by the largest randomized controlled trial in aortic surgery - PAPAartis, jointly funded by the European Union and the German Research Foundation. PAPAartis will include 500 patients at over 33 international centres and is currently recruiting.
