Join us in honoring Dr. Fred A. Crawford Jr., 83rd AATS President, and recipient of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award, by donating to the Dr. Fred A. Crawford Jr. Leadership Academy Lectureship. In 2008, a group of surgeons led by Dr. Crawford established the AATS Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy remains one of the most unique and impactful initiatives of the AATS. In recognition of Dr. Crawford’s lasting contributions to the scientific and surgical community, as well as to his mentees and patients, the AATS Foundation is proud to establish a named lectureship in his honor.
The Academy was created to equip aspiring leaders with the administrative, interpersonal, and mentoring skills essential for success as academic cardiothoracic surgeons. This intensive, didactic, and interactive program has since provided over 300 surgeons with core non-technical and leadership skills, enabling them to take the next step in their careers. Under Dr. Crawford’s leadership as Chair from 2008 to 2017, and later as Chair Emeritus from 2018 to 2025, the Academy has achieved remarkable success: 85% of participants from the classes of 2009–2022 (256 individuals) have become AATS members. Of those, 34% have gone on to serve as Committee and Program Chairs within the Association, with 13 serving on the Board and three ultimately becoming AATS Presidents.
Make a pledge or donation to contribute to the legacy of Dr. Crawford and the future of the Leadership Academy.
