The AATS Foundation Honoring Our Mentors Programs have been established to honor those cardiothoracic surgeons who have demonstrated long-standing leadership and dedication over the course of their careers to the surgical specialty and their trainees.
Alain Carpentier, MD, PhD
This initiative supports young surgical scientists with a Carpentier AATS Foundation Award for original translational and clinical research to promote treatment advances in valvular heart disease.
Aldo R. Castañeda, MD
Aldo R. Castañeda Fellowship provides Latin American congenital heart surgeons who are within their first ten years of practice the opportunity to spend up to three months observational training with a host in North America who is ideally a first or subsequent generation mentee of Aldo Castañeda.
Lawrence H. Cohn, MD
AATS Foundation Cohn Lectureship awards an ACGME-approved cardiothoracic residency program with a specific educational need to host a prestigious AATS lecturer in an impactful presentation. The Honoring Our Mentors Lawrence H. Cohn Fund also supports the Cohn AATS Foundation Surgical Investigator Award to young surgical scientists to conduct clinical and translational research.
Denton A. Cooley, MD
Denton A. Cooley Fellowship offers an educational experience for North American cardiothoracic surgeons who are in their final year of their residency or have recently completed their residency within the past two years to spend four weeks studying at the Texas Heart Institute and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.

This program honors the 85th president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
Marc R. de Leval, MD
Marc R. de Leval Fellowship gives young North American trainees and early career congenital heart surgeons the opportunity to spend four to six weeks studying congenital heart surgery clinical techniques at International institutions and developing relationships with international congenital heart surgeons.
Timothy J. Gardner, MD

F. Griffith Pearson, MD
F. Griffith Pearson Fellowship provides an educational experience for North American cardiothoracic surgeons who have recently completed their residency or fellowship to spend a focused period of four to six weeks studying general thoracic clinical techniques at a host institution in North America.
Jack A. Roth, MD
Jack A. Roth Fellowship in Thoracic Surgical Oncology provides a unique opportunity for thoracic oncologic surgeons who have recently completed their training. The training program is designed as a two- to four-week observational fellowship and will involve full integration into all clinical and academic programs of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The Honoring Our Mentors Jack A. Roth Fund also supports the Roth AATS Foundation Surgical Investigator Award for young surgical scientists to conduct clinical and translational research.
Delos (Toby) M. Cosgrove, MD, Bruce W. Lytle, MD, Floyd D. Loop, MD
Honoring Our Cleveland Clinic Mentors Program is for North American cardiothoracic surgery residents in the chief/penultimate year of their training to participate in a full-day program at the Cleveland Clinic to obtain a basic understanding of the steps necessary to secure their first full-time position following completion of their training, developing areas of expertise, and beginning their careers in an academic program.
Valerie W. Rusch, MD
Valerie Rusch Mentored Career Development Award provides grants for women cardiothoracic surgeons and the development of cardiothoracic expertise in Low-to-Middle Income Countries to support clinical observational training, translational research, and the opportunity to have a visiting cardiac surgeon-mentor provide training, education, or research support at the recipient's home institution.
David J. Sugarbaker, MD
David J. Sugarbaker Memorial Lectureship is presented as a highlight of the AATS Annual Meeting and International Thoracic Surgical Oncology Summit. The first of its kind lectureship, given by a true pioneer in cardiothoracic surgery, honors the legacy of Dr. David J. Sugarbaker. Additionally, a Surgical Resident Investigator Award is funded annually for a surgical resident focused on thoracic surgical oncology research.
Sir Magdi Yacoub
Sir Magdi Yacoub International Mentored Career Development Award provides grants to international cardiac surgeons to support clinical observational training, translational research, and the opportunity to have a visiting cardiac surgeon-mentor provide training, education, or research support at the recipient's home institution.
