Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Statement

The AATS is committed to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive professional organization for cardiothoracic surgery by valuing members of the cardiothoracic community because of their differences. We recognize that the recruitment and engagement of surgeons from diverse and emerging groups is imperative for improving the inequalities in the cardiothoracic health of society. We believe that promoting diversity amongst cardiothoracic surgical leadership will attract the best and the brightest from all backgrounds to the specialty.

As an academic association, we are at our best when there is a global exchange of knowledge and experiences. Within our scientific meetings and publications, by participating in academic exchange we celebrate our differences through the peer review and scientific process. By recognizing members within our community as peers, in equal standing with one another, we can revolutionize our specialty and advance patient care.

  • A diverse workforce translates into better healthcare outcomes and promotes equitable care for all patients.
  • The level of diversity in the AATS leadership, membership, and staff should reflect the diversity of the cardiothoracic community.
  • Diversity in leadership will improve disparities in workforce by attracting emerging groups to our specialty.
  • The AATS rejects all forms of bigotry and bias due to a person's race, color, religion, sex and orientation, national origin, age, or disability.

Committed to action. Committed to long-term change. Committed to the advancement of patient care.
