Travel Document Requirements for Entry into Canada
Canada has one of the most advanced customs processes in the world to provide visitors with security and ease of travel. Visitors must have valid travel documents to enter Canada to provide proof of their citizenship. Document requirements vary depending on the country from which travel originates.
Note: If you already have a valid passport, make sure to double check the expiration date as it needs to be valid for six-months following your departure.
U.S. Residents: American visitors travelling by air, land and sea require a valid passport to re-enter the United States.
International Visitors: All visitors to Canada require a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa), except citizens of countries where an exemption has been granted. For a complete listing of countries whose citizens require a visa, please refer to www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp. For specific information on travel documents required to visit Canada from countries other than the U.S., refer to www.cbsa.gc.ca and www.cic.gc.ca.
The AATS encourages those without a passport and/or visa to plan in advance to ensure receipt of your passport/visa in sufficient time. Be sure to submit your documents at least six weeks prior to your departure date.
For important safety and security information please read the U.S. Department of State’s Country Specific Information on Canada.
