The following list of Thoracic Surgical textbooks are books most commonly suggested by residents as helpful to them during their residencies. The annotations will assist residents and fellows in deciding which will be most useful depending on track and interests.

Operative Cardiac Surgery, Timothy J. Gardner, 5th edition, $349, ISBN# 0-340-5974-7. The most comprehensive Atlas with full color illustrations. Sections include surgery for ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, thoracic aortic disease, cardiac rhythm disorder and tumors as well congentital hear disease. This new edition includes minimal access operations and "off-pump" procedures.

Surgical Anatomy of the Heart, Benson R. Wilcox, $220, ISBN# 1841100285. An excellent collection of high quality photographs and schematic pictures of normal and "diseased" heart. It includes all congenital lesions as well as adult cardiac pathology and anatomy. Highly recommended!

Sabiston & Spencer Surgery of the Chest, Frank Sellke, 7th edition, $299, ISBN# 0721600921. An excellent edition of the legendary "Sabiston and Spencer Surgery of the Chest". It includes easy-to-read chapters on thoracic, adult and pediatric surgery. Another advantage of this textbook is its large number of picture, figures, tables and diagrams that complement each chapter. An ideal book for residents and fellows!

Current Therapy in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Stephen Yang et al, 1st edition, $159, ISBN# 0323014577. First "Current Therapy in Cardiothoracic Surgery" was published almost 15 years ago. This volume represents a complete renewal by a group of experts. The book concentrates on up-to-date therapy and does not replace a textbook. However, it is a superb and short review of entire field of Thoracic Surgery for board preparation purposes.

Hurst's the heart, Valentin Fuster et al., 11th edition, $150, ISBN# 0071422641. A textbook of cardiology seem to be not necessary for a Thoracic resident. However, a thorough knowledge of the cardiologist literature and references is essential for future interaction and fruitful discussion with the cardiology colleagues. The training goal of a cardiac surgeon is to become a cardiologist, who can operate! This book is the golden standard for the cardiovascular medicine community. The chapters on valvular hear disease and coronary artery bypass grafting are authored by Dr. Starr and Dr. Lytle, respectively.

Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

Comprehensive Surgical Management of Congenital Heart Disease, Richard A. Jonas, $199, ISBN# 0-340-80807-1. A comprehensive and very readable textbook on all aspects of congenital heart surgery. First section describes the rationale for early correction, the anesthesia and postoperative care for patients undergoing congenital hear surgery. The second section concentrates on cardiopulmonary bypass and myocardial protection. The last section covers individual congenital anomalies with plethora of illustrations and useful tables.

Congenital Cardiac Surgery, Bruce A. Reitz et al., $199, ISBN# 0838515428. A concise overview of congenital cardiac surgery with many pictures and diagrams. The three chapters involve preoperative evaluation of children with congenital heart disease. The second and largest section expands on pathophysiology and management of these defects. This portion is well conceptualized with diagrams of major anatomic anomalies, pertinent features and atlas-like exposure to operative managements. The third chapters deals with the postoperative care.

Surgery of Coronary Artery Disease, David J. Wheatley, 2nd edition, $199, ISBN# 0-340-80787-3. A great compendium on epidemiology, diagnosis, complications and surgical and catheter-based treatment of CAD. Off-pump, minimal access and redo operations are discussed at length. This book is not obligatory for a Thoracic surgery residents' library, but it is a wonderful and very useful addition.

This Official Publication of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery is a quarterly atlas that provides copiously illustrated articles on surgical techniques in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery written by recognized experts in the field. Each issue is devoted to a single topic of contemporary interest that is explored through a selection of articles comparing techniques that are used by different surgeons to attain similar results. Original line drawings, color figures, and imaging studies are included in each issue.

Statistical Modeling for Biomedical Researchers, William D. Dupont, $50, ISBN# 0521820618. This is a great asset to physician scientist who has at least basic understanding of statistical methodology and a good mathematical background. It explains a number of advanced statistical methods that have been proven to be very valuable in medical research.

An excellent guide on how to avoid/reduce the incidence of complications in operations involving thoracic, cardiac and aortic surgery.
